Dear
Avilar,
We are undergoing a
training and development initiative for our senior
level managers and realize that a critical
component will be, not only to identify the
current skills they need to be successful in their
roles as managers right now, but also trying to
foresee the skills they'll need to be successful
in the near future.
What types of manager
skills do you think will be
most important in the coming years given the state
of the economy, the state of talent in the talent
pool, and the aging demographics of many senior
leaders?
Sincerely,
"Identifying Skills for
Tomorrow"
Dear
"Identifying Skills for
Tomorrow", Kudos for taking on
such an important and valuable initiative! You may
not realize it, but you are in the beginning
stages of building a competency model for your
senior managers. A competency models defines the
critical skills required to be successful in a
given job-role including levels of proficiency and
a rating of how important the skill is in relation
to the other critical skills. You can
view an excerpt from the Avilar Competency Model
here.
These two free white papers will
provide you with some valuable insights before
embarking on the project.

Management: The Critical Success Factors
2. Common
Competency Management Pitfalls: How to Avoid
Detours on the Road to Competency
Management
As for senior level manager
skills for your competency model, every
organization is different due to business model,
culture, and a wide range of other variables. You
might consider including some of the following
skills with fairly high levels
of proficiency. Some are timeless in their
importance and some more geared toward planning
for the future.
- Adaptability
- Integrity
- Visioning
- Influence
- Innovative thinking
- Systems thinking
- Quality focus
- Technology awareness
- Embraces technology
-
-
Develops/Mentors others
-
Manages virtual team
-
Sets performance expectations
-
Builds & sustains relationships
- Self-awareness & control
- Solution assessment & validation
- Project management & execution
-
Identifies required resources &
budget
-
Identifies & evaluates
risks As you begin to build your
competency model, keep in mind that you are trying
to identify the most critical skills required for
success, not every skill every employee needs.
Best wishes for a successful program and I hope
you'll keep us posted on how things are
going! Cheers,
Andy Jaynes
