An Unintentional Use of A Competency Management Solution
This fortune 50 company manufacturing plant found that a competency management solution was valuable far beyond its original intent.
        Overview and Challenge
A fortune 50 technology manufacturer aimed to improve quality levels of its products by expanding the development of employees at one of its factories. However, the company faced unique challenges in assessing training needs. The factory floor did not resemble a typical office space. Employees did not have easy access to computers and were not comfortable with using computers. Employees also depended on working at a pace as to keep up with the rest of the factory and so did not have ample time during the day to take assessments and complete training courses. In addition to these organizational challenges, the client desired a genuine commitment from its employees but was unsure of how to portray the system in an inviting manner. The client wanted detailed and accurate assessments, but didn’t want to detract from manufacturing needs such as employee time commitments and product quality.
          Solution
In order to meet some of the unique characteristics and integrate the solution into corporate culture while not disrupting manufacturing production, several steps were taken. To facilitate an inviting and fun assessment environment, the user interface was customized to have friendly, graphical characters invite employees to log in. To overcome the lack of computer access and time, kiosks were set...

Industry News - Converging Learning and Performance, an HCM Maturity Model, When HR and IT Meet

The Convergence of Learning and Performance Management
Josh Bersin’s article gives an industry analysis of organizations linking learning and performance management and how both HR and training departments approach this issue. There are four categories of approach to Performance Management: Goals Based, Skills and Competency Based, Talent Management Based, and Performance Reviews and 360 Reviews. The article explains the categories, performance management, and the integration of systems in more detail.

                                  Human Capital Management Maturity Model
The purpose of this article is to provide an HCM model to assist in the creation of organizational strategy which develops talent to meet company skill requirements. In order to avoid the mistakes that many companies make by deploying HCM solutions without the correct preparations, the HCM model displays the five ordered steps that must be taken to reach an integrated HCM program. With a fully integrated HCM program, HR executives and other business leaders can reach corporate goals through the use of cost-effective training and a more coordinated and motivated workforce. They also have workforce metrics to empower strategic and smart decision-making.

When HR and IT Orbits Meet
This Optimize magazine article draws attention to the increasing use of technology in HR practices and the necessity for IT and HR departments to communicate their needs to one another. In order for such programs as Competency Management software to successfully integrate, both departments need to form strategic relationships. A few pieces of advice offered as to how and why the two department heads should mix are:
                                  • Each can be one another’s advocate when explaining needs to budget controllers
                                  • As business conditions and labor markets change, so does HR’s approach to program delivery. Technology is increasing in importance.
                                  • HCM technology investments will lead to high- performing organizations as long as IT provides the technological stability and HR provides the workforce input

                                      Puzzle

                                        Avilar Launches New Website
Last week Avilar launched its new website with one purpose in mind; simplification. The new website, inspired by the Human Capital Management 2005 study, offers several customized paths to find information from the home page including job title, products and solutions.
“We want people to use our website not only to contact us for information on our products and solutions, but also as a way to increase their eLearning and competency management knowledge,” says Avilar CEO John Skowlund.
The website takes several approaches in order to simplify the learning process for visitors by only providing relevant information. One example is to begin by job function. As an HR Manager, the visitor will see competency management’s uses in relation to proactive people management whereas a Training Manager sees information on automation efficiency and showcasing the value of training to management. If visitors want to go straight to product information without lengthy verbiage, they simple click on the appropriate tab for competency management or eLearning.
“A dominant reason HR vocabulary, and solution themselves, have become so confusing is from vendors,” said Skowlund. “At Avilar we try to focus on simplification and clarity. We’re not in the business of winning customers over with words, we win them over with proven solutions.”
